I had the pleasure of meeting and photographing Kyla Jones, founder of Black Sistahood Inc., a non-profit organization for African American women. During our shoot, we had a great conversation about the lack of representation of BIWOC, specifically black women. We spoke about how often we are the only BIPOC in the room and how odd it is that many people we’ve worked with claim they are inclusive but only have one black light skin woman, and maaaybe a Latina working there lol. I learned a lot from our conversation and I’m so glad we crossed paths! Kyla’s passion for African American women is what I admire most about her and is what caught my attention from the get-go. Be sure to check out Black Sistahood Inc. on Instagram! Black Sistahood Inc., is a nonprofit founded by Kyla. This nonprofit was created to help young African American girls and women build community. Through support groups and scholarships, they aim to not only prevent or stop issues but also encourage, educate, bring healing, safety and awareness about depression, domestic violence, drug, alcohol abuse, illiteracy, teen pregnancy and more. Black SistaHood Inc. hopes to overall improve our community by catering to the cultural differences of the African American community by allowing these young women to be unapologetically themselves while creating an environment that will encourage them to be the best they can be and become successful members of society.
